Land Settlement in Australia and the records created. At the time several of our members
gave an outline of some of their research. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">One of our group spoke at length about an interesting lease taken up by
one of her relatives. The following are some notes about her research:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Her story follows:-<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“Your grandfather won the block at Maclagan in a ballot!”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">With only a statement like that how do you find out the
information?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I had no idea what a ballot was but that was my starting
point. This is from the Queensland Archives website:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Ballot: The Queensland Government released land to build
communities in the fledgling state, wishing to encourage more intensive use of
agricultural land to increase food production. When demand for land outstripped
supply, the government used a lottery to allocate land fairly.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I soon discovered there were many types of ballots. My only
information was his name and that he received land in a ballot.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I started with Trove Newspapers.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Finally after searching ‘Trove’ for months, I found a
sentence in a report in the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Daily Mercury
(Mackay Qld), Saturday 9 July 1932, page 16: On The Land.</i><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The newspaper gave me a date and the
following sentence gave me the area and type of ballot and Philip Walsh was
mentioned.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All the information I need to
start my search. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">‘For portion S3, parish of Rosalie, containing 320 acres, in
the direction of Moola and which was opened at Toowoomba on Monday for
prickly-pear development<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and perpetual
lease, there were 265 applicants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Philip
Walsh senior, of Kingsthorpe, won the ballot.’<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I needed to find out about prickly-pear and the leases
offered. The newspapers had many articles about the prickly pear in Queensland.
The Land Acts were mentioned: <span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Land
Acts 1910 to 1931, The Prickly-Pear Land Acts 1923 to 1931 and also amendment
to the above Acts, these had information to explain the prickly pear
development ballot.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It was suggested that I send an email to the Queensland
State Archives asking if they had information on Philip Walsh. A very positive
reply came back there was file with 65 pages in it!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This warranted a trip
to the Archives.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The very first page in the file was the application for a
Prickly-pear Development Selection.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This
form puts the applicant’s name into the ballot.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">At the land selection ballot events, numbered marbles
(called ‘olives’) were placed in a locked ballot box in equal number to the
applications for land received. The Land Commissioner then chose a non-applicant
to draw marbles from the box using the extractor. For each block, the
non-applicant would draw a marble and whoever held the corresponding number
would be allocated that block.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Reading the 65 pages I collected from the Archives gave the
details of the 40 year Prickly pear Development lease from the application, to
the final sale.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I had used maps from the Queensland folder in the TDDFHS Library
but where exactly was it? This was answered by a gentleman who worked for
Philip Walsh.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He drew a mud map with
current directions. FAN (Family, Associates and Neighbours) came to our rescue.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Don’t discount any source for your search. Results do
happen!<o:p></o:p></p>

Over the years there were different requirements in the information given. At first the information was given orally and later there was a form to fill in. When the child left the school to go to another school a transfer form with the information was filled out.</p><p>The admission register does not always follow the following format as the columns may come in a different order. The very early books do not show the name of the parent or a very detailed address. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm60GZoLwDbfocJ_szOeeEdPZz0uULnIJCM5wMotNmuHn5AyceWQ53zsn5PmEGMMgm2AcH_PuaTxGdyJ_gvYDcfr7TiI4jCMSIMujE6Yv6130s80OxSldJduhzkyn3sl6YHfoi7uRCUYHOKC-8s1iWuNBUUhmMn-2vW4fRacpzml5ouYsOtfLGoC-XKQ/s1275/1919%20Heading%20SAR%20Example.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="178" data-original-width="1275" height="90" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm60GZoLwDbfocJ_szOeeEdPZz0uULnIJCM5wMotNmuHn5AyceWQ53zsn5PmEGMMgm2AcH_PuaTxGdyJ_gvYDcfr7TiI4jCMSIMujE6Yv6130s80OxSldJduhzkyn3sl6YHfoi7uRCUYHOKC-8s1iWuNBUUhmMn-2vW4fRacpzml5ouYsOtfLGoC-XKQ/w563-h90/1919%20Heading%20SAR%20Example.jpg" width="563" /></a></div><i><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">1919 Register</span></i></div></i><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzVrTQLwY-TIyN75wxHusxZLXiahqiwy2BEJeGoEeTR7SsQn8PG099Ax5KZB-_ij5GzuiCtByNADl_juppH3IXHAlut1c5JIU9pm6tMD9pHWpiAUkoz4S1Z4lR4GuXoDypGQqj9Rr5y-cf8ANdwU02zKS_jF2bKC5J2V-laYus1J7JvICiFq_UbgTJhg/s1611/1877%20Zillmere%20SS%20Register%20Headings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="153" data-original-width="1611" height="60" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzVrTQLwY-TIyN75wxHusxZLXiahqiwy2BEJeGoEeTR7SsQn8PG099Ax5KZB-_ij5GzuiCtByNADl_juppH3IXHAlut1c5JIU9pm6tMD9pHWpiAUkoz4S1Z4lR4GuXoDypGQqj9Rr5y-cf8ANdwU02zKS_jF2bKC5J2V-laYus1J7JvICiFq_UbgTJhg/w573-h60/1877%20Zillmere%20SS%20Register%20Headings.jpg" width="573" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>1877 Register </i></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7qs-mI6-VV36ra2kuWlVT4f1eC3v_FVxJRiYtXfovr3jF1oZwcIFVcMoZlr7fi7PcTJDpYPwmmjZ3NzFnq6n5eS0DYWe0Rog_ZreR7XUTL30YPAUl3Y73rC2ZJlC1qLdkImysps_dAPS75VA0V2zQJEqTILl12CP_DUUViND7OHbSmVmvX_j0Q3RmgQ/s811/jw_QLD_School_Admission%20Register_Data.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="811" data-original-width="704" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7qs-mI6-VV36ra2kuWlVT4f1eC3v_FVxJRiYtXfovr3jF1oZwcIFVcMoZlr7fi7PcTJDpYPwmmjZ3NzFnq6n5eS0DYWe0Rog_ZreR7XUTL30YPAUl3Y73rC2ZJlC1qLdkImysps_dAPS75VA0V2zQJEqTILl12CP_DUUViND7OHbSmVmvX_j0Q3RmgQ/w557-h640/jw_QLD_School_Admission%20Register_Data.jpg" width="557" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: x-small;">Click on any of the images above to enlarge.<br /><i><br /></i></span><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Judy H Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12937408878412028000noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3942965895605446344.post-50412613094587385822023-01-18T10:23:00.009+10:002023-01-24T20:55:33.952+10:00School Admission Registers<p style="text-align: left;"> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOBvGqHDB6SMEqWDaCoUejO-RP8vbkDV6a3Yk8bpwzXSX1RKG-likbDDXB02V_hSBFGKx_pvEFmeE8G0pbnaL0tdBe1GtJUQCZ_Tz_IvSNimpnKXcwWPGlyBdFd2zCo2A9x-V9pOMp7jN8ogv0G2maaYsiob8jetKIbsi0OUvqk485s-0QyfqcVt5hCA/s1600/Toowoomba%20North%20State%20School%20QSL%20FL1380429_ed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="989" data-original-width="1600" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOBvGqHDB6SMEqWDaCoUejO-RP8vbkDV6a3Yk8bpwzXSX1RKG-likbDDXB02V_hSBFGKx_pvEFmeE8G0pbnaL0tdBe1GtJUQCZ_Tz_IvSNimpnKXcwWPGlyBdFd2zCo2A9x-V9pOMp7jN8ogv0G2maaYsiob8jetKIbsi0OUvqk485s-0QyfqcVt5hCA/w400-h248/Toowoomba%20North%20State%20School%20QSL%20FL1380429_ed.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Early pupils Toowoomba North State School</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Photo Coutesy John Oxley Library</i></span></div><p></p><p>We are lucky in Queensland in so far as so many of our public school students admission register have been deposited at the state archives. <b><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">When was our first
Dawn Service in Toowoomba?<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">It
seems that many towns want to claim that the first Dawn Service was held on
their patch. None more so than Toowoomba. For those who attended one of the
many services held in the Toowoomba Regional Council area, they possibly would
have noted that on page 12 of the Toowoomba 100th Anniversary Anzac Day
Commemoration Service handout it says: "First Dawn Service in Australia
conducted in Toowoomba, 25th April, 1922."</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">The
Society has done extensive research on this issue and as Rockhampton held a "Daybreak
Service" on 25th April 1916 perhaps they deserve the credit of the first
Dawn Service. Part of the wording of the newspaper article that appeared in the
Morning Bulletin on the 26th April said "The morning broke dull and
cheerless; but just as the service started at half-past six o'clock the sun
burst through the clouds and shone as gloriously and as brightly as it did on
that memorable and never to be forgotten 25th of April, 1915, when the
Australians and New Zealanders, with no traditions behind them, emerged from
the obscure and, with one magnificent achievement, gained a niche in the temple
of fame and performed a feat which will live on so long as time endures. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">So
far as the sentence that appears in the handout which says:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">"At
dawn on the 25th April 1919, Colonel Geo. Harrington and a few returned mates
met at Picnic Point to remember comrades who perished at Gallipoli and on the
Battlefields of France. In true Aussie stile (sic) they toasted their memory in
rum. They did the same thing again in 1920 & 21 with the numbers increasing
each year it was suggested that a more formal gathering was needed so in 1922 a
Formal Service was conducted. Speeches were made, Prayers were said, the Ode
was read followed by a Bugler sounding Last Post and Reveille. And the National
Anthem was sung."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">The
George Robert Harrington referred to was a Captain and at one stage an Acting-Major.
On the 25th April, 1919 he was still in England with his English wife waiting
to come home on the <i>Wahehe</i>. This
information was contained not only in his WWI dossier, but also in an article
in the Darling Downs Gazette on 7th June 1919 advising as follows: "Capt
(Acting-Major) G. R. Harrington, has advised his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
Harrington, Neil-street that he is leaving London in the troop-ship Wahehe, and
expects to arrive about the end of this month".<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">George
had worked in the railway before leaving for active service and therefore his
job would have been waiting for him when he got home. In 1919, according to the
electoral roll, he and his wife Alice Annie are shown living in Northgate and
he was a railway employee. They were still there in 1926 when he was shown as
being a clerk, whether or not still in the railway or somewhere else is not
clear. However he and Alice moved to Toowoomba sometime before 1930 and were
living in Eleanor Street. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">This
puts paid to the story that George Harrington was anywhere near Picnic Point on
Anzac Day 1919 and who knows if George came to Toowoomba in 1920 and 1921. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">Now
for the Anzac Dawn Service and its beginnings. The Darling Downs Gazette of
24th April 1922 advised the Returned Soldiers' Arrangements were as follows:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">"The
R.S.S.I.L.A. will meet at 9 a.m. at the Cemetery and place memorial cards on
the graves of the returned soldiers resting there. All returned soldiers are
asked to assemble at the drill shed, Margaret-street, at 10 a.m. in uniform, if
available. The parade will march to the monument where Canon Davies will
deliver a short address at 10.30, after which the President of the League will
place a wreath and the 'Last Post' will be sounded by Bandmaster J.
Compton". Who then was organising the formal gathering with speeches etc.?
The only mention of dawn was in a report in the <st1:personname w:st="on">Toowoomba
Chronicle</st1:personname> which said "The sun had hardly risen yesterday
morning when a mother placed upon the glorious monument at the corner of
Ruthven and Margaret streets her silent token - a remembrance of her loved
one." There is no mention of anyone else being there but rather the next
article speaks of the Soldiers Fathers Association journey to the Cemetery. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">The
first reference to a Dawn Service was in 1947. On 19th April the following
mention was made<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 36.0pt; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"><i>"Members
are requested to watch the press for particulars relating to the "Dawn
Service" to be held at the Mother's Memorial on Anzac Morning commencing
at 5 o'clock. This will be the first occasion on which a "Dawn
Service" has been held in Toowoomba and it is hoped that there will be a
good attendance of both former Servicemen and the public."<o:p></o:p></i></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">The
full program then appears in the <st1:personname w:st="on">Toowoomba Chronicle</st1:personname>
when mention is also made that the 10.15 service will conclude at 10.40 a.m.
when church parades will be formed under the direction of Major G. R.
Harrington. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
