Toowoomba's First Dawn Service

When was our first Dawn Service in Toowoomba?

It seems that many towns want to claim that the first Dawn Service was held on their patch. None more so than Toowoomba. For those who attended one of the many services held in the Toowoomba Regional Council area, they possibly would have noted that on page 12 of the Toowoomba 100th Anniversary Anzac Day Commemoration Service handout it says: "First Dawn Service in Australia conducted in Toowoomba, 25th April, 1922."

New Publication Available Now! Our Backyard Revisited

The Society is pleased to announce that our latest publication is now back from the printers.

Our latest publication, Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery:Our Backyard Revisited is available now from the Society.

This book contains the histories of almost 100 family groups. Some of these groups include as many as 10 family members. The publication is an A4 book containing 250 pages. The book includes many family photographs as well as monuments.

The book may be bought  during the society's opening hours, Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm, or by post. The cost is $30, and postage for 1 or 2 books together is $13.40.

Roamin' Around Rockville

Roamin’ Around Rockville.

The recent publication by the Toowoomba and Darling Downs Family History Society, “Roamin’ Around Rockville”, explores the development of the Rockville suburb on the northern border of Toowoomba.

Rockville was first developed in 1901 as a residential area for the employees at the Willowburn Asylum, Willowburn Railways Workshops, and the Darling Downs Co-operative Bacon Factory, as well as other industries in the area.

This seventy-six page, fully indexed, book with photos, illustrations and maps looks at seventy local families, with chapters on the industries, businesses, hospitals, and schools within the Rockville area. It records the memories of the older residents who were interviewed for the project; further details of births, deaths, marriages, and occupations are also included for these families.

There is a chapter on the naming of the streets, and another on the aspects of the modern changing suburb.

Rockville was a close knit community, it was self sufficient, and it had its fair share of larrikins and hard working residents, traits that are still evident today.

The book is available from the Society for $20 AUD plus $3 postage in Australia.

Our Backyard --Out at last!

Thanks to all the "Behind the Scenes" work by our editors, designer and contributors the Society's New Publication, Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery-Our Backyard is nearly ready for publication.

This contains vignettes of 139  people buried in our own backyard, the Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.

This book is our contribution to the celebrations of Queensland's 150th birthday.

Our new book to be launched at 10 am on Wednesday 9 December 2009 at 452 South St Toowoomba.

I have just been looking at the CD I purchased yesterday of all the past copies of THE GAZETTE ..[1987-2009] the societies magazine..wowee well done girls.
Fantastic to be able to easily access all those articles and of course the biggest plus is that being in pdf format, it is searchable.

Added bonus is that I can now free up some much needed shelf space in my cupboard by disposing of past printed copies..THANK YOU !
